Weird 'dog-headed pig monster' terrorizes Africa
Residents in northern Namibia, on the southwest coast of Africa, have reported being terrorized by a bizarre dog-pig hybrid creature. The animal is said to be mostly white and unlike anything the villagers have ever seen, with a doglike head and the broad, round, nearly hairless back and shoulders of a giant pig. The beast was spotted chasing and attacking dogs, goats and other domestic animals in this arid region not far from the Kalahari desert.
As often happens when rumors of monsters spread in rural areas around the world, some locals have taken extra safety precautions, such as traveling in groups and arming themselves with weapons. In 1995 and 1996, some Puerto Ricans armed themselves against the vampire beast el chupacabra; last year, Malaysian residents patrolled the streets searching for the mysterious orang minyak, or "oily man" creature that had recently terrorized them.
What could this monster be? One Namibian official, regional councilor Andreas Mundjindi, was quoted in Informante newspaper as saying, "This is an alien animal that the people have not seen before. We don't have a forest here, only bushes. So, this must be black magic at play."

Some people in the area trace the beast to one old man rumored to be a warlock or witch doctor, suggesting it's his pet (or, what witch-hunters hundreds of years ago would have called a "familiar").
The assumption that the beast has magical origins is not surprising. A 2010 Gallup poll found belief in magic widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with more than half of respondents saying they personally believe in witchcraft and sorcery.
This is not the first time that unusual animals have been spotted in rural areas of Namibia; several other monsters have been reported over the years, including in July 2009, when unknown creatures reportedly sucked the blood out of livestock, including nearly two dozen goats. Though no one saw the monsters, they were said to have left footprints similar to those of a dog, but much larger. Police followed the footprints, but they mysteriously stopped in an open field, as if the creature suddenly took flight or vanished. At that time, locals were also convinced that the strange beast was the product of black magic ? going so far as to accuse an old man and his sister of conjuring the creature.
It's not clear whether locals believe that the current dog-headed, pig-bodied animal is the same mystery creature that terrorized the region three years ago. Whether the reports are real or rumor, hopefully belief in these creatures won't be used as an excuse for mob attacks on elderly men and women suspected of witchcraft.

Why???Without life going wrong, we wouldn?t have any good stories.??Story hinges on something happening, and not in the way the people it is happening to expect, which is just how we like it.??Is that crazy???Possibly, but it?s just how this kind of love works.??And love of story, I can?t help but think, is at the heart of why so many of us who grew up falling asleep with?Pride and Prejudice?on our pillows became the editors who sit in audience at?A Midsummer Night?s Dream?secretly reworking some of the immortal bard?s syntax.
For all their mutual obsession with the written word, editing and writing are often at cross purposes.? Editing is essentially a craft.??Guided by certain rules and conventions, you retool prose that is already slated for publication, dotting the ?i?s and crossing the ?t?s, so to speak.??It makes the left brain, the person inside you who likes to vacuum and shape your cuticles into perfectly arched crescent moons, extremely happy.??True, it acknowledges the right brain with a polite nod from across the room, but that is all.
Whereas writing, at least creative writing, belongs to the muses, those larger-than-life divas who drape themselves in feather boas and overrun the right brain at 3 in the morning while playing their music at full blast.??Needless to say, they demand complete control of your faculties, particularly in the initial stages of creation, when the blank page looms over your field of vision like an ominous thundercloud.??The creative spark commands center stage, period.??The left brain and its vacuums can just hold it.
At one time or another, all of us with such feather boas in our closets dream of idling the rest of our days in Parisian cafes, hunched wistfully over a journal on an impossibly tiny round table.??It?s a fetching fantasy, one that Owen Wilson updated with understated sensitivity in?Midnight in Paris.??Something about that lovable Texas twang in conversation with Hemingway on the Left Bank, though, upset my normal willing suspension of disbelief and brought the plausibility of writing for a living palpably into question.??Does writing the great American novel really afford the opportunity to take three-hour lunches in the Latin Quarter for a solid year or so?
As I see it, the phrase ?writing for a living? is open to interpretation.??Yes, you can watch your bank account grow in direct proportion to the number of words you string together.? You can also write simply to live better today than you did yesterday.
One of my favorite authors, Michele de Montaigne, the most honest and groundbreaking of essayists, pioneered the written exploration of the interior life, a genuine innovation in his day.??His revolutionary idea was to use language to explore how best to live, though he also told us plenty about his kidney stones, sexual appetite, household pets, distaste for sport, and other topics in the interest of full disclosure of his humanity.
Far from practicing mere self-indulgence, writing his essays served the most practical purpose imaginable: to enable him to observe his life, interior and exterior, as closely as possible and thus not to miss its beauty, however subtle.??Day after day, he mined and exposed his peccadilloes, prejudices, and predilections.??He also told absorbing stories, though with innumerable diversions and often no real ending.
Like Montaigne, I also like to think that writing can provide well-needed clarification on what this living business is all about.??But if I?m mistaken and am none the wiser, at least I?ve given myself something to do aside from burdening my neighbors with my harmonica practice.??At least I?ve nestled up close with the written word.??Time spent with those you love is never wasted.
Call me naive, but in the end I see no way around the fact that love defies all explanation; it just happens. ?It is the invisible prime mover that simply gets everything going, including the urge to write and rewrite, read and reread.? For those of us for whom a well-placed comma is nothing less than melodic, however, we know our lover to be a bewitching, elusive minx.
Fortunately for fans of Charles Dickens, David Sedaris, Haruki Murakami, and prolific writers everywhere, all lovers enjoy the thrill of the chase.? And for all our seeming stillness at coffee shops, staring into laptops dotted with jagged, half-written paragraphs, those of us who wield words for a living are in hot pursuit.
We?re attempting to distill the fluidity of human existence ? that storied, sinuous course that we know cannot run smoothly ? into sentences without too many restrictive clauses.? Sure, it might sound like a frivolous endeavor when all is said and done, but that?s only because I?m not putting it well.? The right words are eluding me, though that?s not my fault.??It?s only noon, and the muses aren?t awake yet.??I?ll get back to you at 3 in the morning.

ARMAR Robot Learns by Watching
A robot helping in the household no longer is a dream of the future. ARMAR, the humanoid robot, can understand commands and execute them independently. For instance, it gets the milk out of the fridge. Thanks to cameras and sensors, it orients itself in the room, recognizes objects, and grasps them with the necessary sensitivity. Additionally, it reacts to gestures and learns by watching a human colleague how to empty a dishwasher or clean the counter.
Thus, it adapts naturally to our environment. At the CeBIT, ARMAR will show how it moves between a refrigerator, counter, and dishwasher.

New research has established the "miracle material" called graphene as the world's thinnest known coating for protecting metals against corrosion. Their study on this potential new use of graphene appears in ACS Nano.
In the study, Dhiraj Prasai and colleagues point out that rusting and other corrosion of metals is a serious global problem, and intense efforts are underway to find new ways to slow or prevent it. Corrosion results from contact of the metal's surface with air, water or other substances. One major approach involves coating metals with materials that shield the metal surface, but currently used materials have limitations. The scientists decided to evaluate graphene as a new coating. Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms, many layers of which are in lead pencils and charcoal, and is the thinnest, strongest known material. That's why it is called the miracle material. In graphene, the carbon atoms are arranged like a chicken-wire fence in a layer so thin that is transparent, and an ounce would cover 28 football fields.
They found that graphene, whether made directly on copper or nickel or transferred onto another metal, provides protection against corrosion. Copper coated by growing a single layer of graphene through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) corroded seven times slower than bare copper, and nickel coated by growing multiple layers of graphene corroded 20 times slower than bare nickel. Remarkably, a single layer of graphene provides the same corrosion protection as conventional organic coatings that are more than five times thicker. Graphene coatings could be ideal corrosion-inhibiting coatings in applications where a thin coating is favorable, such as microelectronic components (e.g., interconnects, aircraft components and implantable devices), say the scientists.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan drew praise Wednesday from a judge who said the actress was one court hearing away from putting a long-running drunken driving case behind her.
"Ms. Lohan, you're in the home stretch," Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner told the actress. "The probation officer is pleased with your progress."
The former Disney star has progressed under strict probation guidelines imposed by Sautner last year, including weekly stints working at the morgue and therapy sessions.
Lohan, 25, now has to work 14 days at the morgue and attend five therapy sessions before the judge ends her probation on a 2007 drunken driving case that has dogged Lohan for years.
She is due back in court on March 29 for what could be her final court appearance if she stays out of trouble.
Lohan would remain on informal probation for a case filed after she took a necklace without permission in January 2011 but would no longer have to report to a probation officer or appear in court for frequent updates.
The model-actress is attempting a career comeback and is scheduled to host "Saturday Night Live" on March 3.
"You seem to be getting your life back on track," Sautner told her.

When President Obama released his budget last week, he laid out some ideas to loosen the grip of poverty. I have one to add: two-generation strategies that educate both parents and children at the same time.
It's an idea that builds upon parents' unwavering dreams and aspirations for their children, something we heard first-hand in focus groups of struggling moms and dads around the country last fall. As one New York mom told us, "My dream is providing a better path for my son. It's his future; not mine. It's his future."
At the heart of this idea is that education is core.
Or, as a Detroit mom told us, "Education is number one. There is a future in education."
The bold concept of two-generation strategies is also anchored in research that tells us that parents' level of educational attainment is a powerful predictor of economic mobility. Emerging research also indicates that mutual motivation occurs when both parents and children have access to educational opportunities, and that there is a strong link between maternal work and education and outcomes for children.
What if more programs and systems took cues from these findings and created ways for two generations -- parents and children -- to achieve educational success together? This question has prompted the Aspen Institute's Ascend program to elevate the research, practice, and promise of emerging two-generation approaches.
Imagine if parents and children participated in programs that provided education and skills for both at the same time. It is happening in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Community Action Project's CareerAdvance program where parents whose children are enrolled in local Head Start programs have the opportunity to earn credentials in nursing and health technology -- training linked to high-demand jobs in that community. It is also happening in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the Jeremiah Program, a residential program for mothers and their children. Mothers pursue post-secondary education and their children are enrolled in high-quality early childhood education. The program takes a "wraparound" approach -- with tangible results: 55 percent of mothers graduate with an associate's degree, and 45 percent graduate with a bachelor's degree, while all enrolled children are performing at the appropriate developmental level.
Unfortunately, programs like these are not common. Services that provide education and skills training to adults often view children as a barrier to participation. Similarly, programs focused on children often see parents as merely facilitators of children's education. Consequently, many low-income parents can spend hours getting their children to child care, hurrying across town on public transportation for their own classes, then back again for pick-up and finally home. Two-generation strategies include models that engage whole families, eliminating some of these exhausting complications that can overwhelm parents struggling to provide economic stability for their families.
In these days of growing deficits, pursuing a two-generation strategy also presents the potential to multiply the return on investment in early childhood education for children and in postsecondary education for young parents. Many young parents are trying to strengthen their job skills so they can compete in a new economic climate where jobs are scarce and the needed skills are changing. At the same time, economist James Heckman estimates that for at-risk children, quality early learning can produce an annual rate of return in the range of 7 to 10%.
At Ascend, we believe that partnerships across programs, policies, and systems are essential to this new family-friendly approach to economic security. To promote such partnerships, we have launched the Ascend Fellowship, connecting dynamic leaders from government, philanthropy, research, educational institutions, nonprofit work, media and the private sector.
The Ascend Fellows, armed with both breakthrough ideas and proven strategies, are on the front lines of pioneering two-generation approaches. When business tasks are outsourced the?services are legally rendered by?a company, but in?reality everything is done by?humans. It is expected that these people represent the?company, and?their employer is liable for?any damage caused by?them when they are at?work.
Some lawyers say that it is possible to?execute a?confidentiality agreement with the?employees of?the outsourced company, but this measure is likely to?present you with additional risks of?turning outsourcing into?employment, rather than protecting your commercial secrets. This option is thus not recommended.
Formally under Russian law an?employee is required not to?disclose commercial secret information of?the employer or its business partners or, without their permission, to?use this information for?personal ends and, on?termination or cancellation of?the employment contract, is required to?hand over to?the employer all media containing trade secrets.
But in?reality Russian law does not contain any effective instrument to?make a?company liable for?disclosure of?a client?s commercial secret information committed by?an employee. Thus, having reviewed Russian court practice, we see that one of?the main difficulties is to?show the?cause-and-effect relationship between disclosure of?information and?losses to?business. In?Russia, in?a court dispute the?affected party must prove that illegal actions took place, otherwise the?claim will be dismissed. But very few companies have succeeded in?doing this, as Russian courts take a?very conservative approach to?the protection of?confidential information.
In?addition, throughout the?whole period of?the court proceedings the?company will have no legal opportunity to?stop the?disclosure, as under Russian law this is possible only under a?court decision.
Take, as a?counter example, English law, which allows restrictive covenants. These are contractual noncompete or other obligations designed to?protect a?company?s business. If the?restrictive covenants are breached, the?company can go to?court for?prohibitive interim measures in?order to?preclude a?drawn-out or potential violation, after which a?claim is filed for?recovery of?losses in?cash, sometimes reaching huge sums. Russian law, however, does not allow restrictive covenants.
Summing up the?above, current Russian legislation is very poor at?protecting commercial secrets in?an outsourcing scenario. The?only thing that will stop a?contractor from?disclosing confidential information is earning a?bad reputation on?the market, but this is not an?obstacle for?many companies acting unfairly.

Michael McFaul, the new U.S. ambassador to Moscow, is one of the world's leading experts on Russia and has already become a lightning rod for Kremlin suspicions that he's come to foment revolt. NBC's Jim Maceda speaks to him about his new posting.

At first glance, Michael McFaul seems an odd fit for the post of U.S. ambassador to Russia. Pushing 50, McFaul, a political scientist and tenured professor at Stanford University, has spent almost all his career in the halls of academia, not in diplomacy.
And he hardly looks like a threat; on the contrary, he?s engaging and jovial, combining a plain-speaking folksiness with a laid-back attitude he must get from his Montana and California background. Yet Professor, now Ambassador, McFaul has hit the Russian tarmac with all the force of a howitzer shell.
Just two days on the job (he arrived in mid-January) and he?d become headline news on Russia?s Kremlin-controlled Channel 1, which ran a story about a string of Russian opposition leaders lining up outside his new residence at Spaso House that day, suggesting they were coming to get their instructions from the man who once wrote "Russia?s Unfinished Revolution."
The Russian reporter?s suggestion was that McFaul, a fluent Russian speaker, had come back to finish business.
A red flag of anger suddenly waved defiantly across the national media. McFaul hadn?t yet found his work-out gear in his boxes and he was already being compared to those evil ambassadors of yore, conniving in the shadows to topple the host regime.

But McFaul has taken the Siberia-style cold shoulder in stride. In fact, he says, he was only at that meeting for protocol.
Both Russian government and opposition leaders had come to see the visiting Deputy Secretary of State, William Burns, not him.
And he points out the Russian media never mentioned the rest of his second day on the job.

"I had some very warm, cordial and substantive meetings with people like the Foreign Minister, Prime Minister [Vladimir] Putin?s foreign policy adviser, President [Dmitry] Medvedev?s foreign policy adviser, so when I read that it was unwelcome ? well, we didn?t have the camera crews out for those so I guess that?s the problem, right?" he says.
The real problem, of course, is that, with presidential elections in March, McFaul?s past advocacy for a more democratic Russia has become easy prey for the Kremlin propaganda machine.

In the same vapor breath, thousands of pro-Putin protesters who braved sub-zero Moscow temperatures in early February could be heard chanting "No Orange" (referring to the 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution in Ukraine) and "No U.S. Embassy!"?
But, typically, McFaul is brushing off his rude welcome. In a veiled apology, he says he?s learning from his mistakes (while not naming any).

And he?s raring to go. "If you stop learning, to me as an academic that?s the most insulting thing you can say about anybody.??
How does he sum up his first month as Ambassador? "Invigorating!"
And McFaul is already making his presence felt in other ways. He?s checking official records, but believes he?s the first resident of Spaso House to set up a Nerf Basketball hoop in one of the giant reception rooms.

He thinks he?s also the first to play badminton in the salon. McFaul is confident the chilly "first impression" will change.
"We?ll find our way and I think also Russia and our Russian guests will find their way in dealing with a different kind of group at Spaso House," he says.
And if it doesn?t get any better, Ambassador McFaul can always resort to his two secret weapons: basketball and badminton diplomacy.
